In recent years, the allure and value of authenticated original photography have been steadily climbing. I've been chatting with fellow collectors, delving into what makes certain photos stand out and gain value. About four months back, I decided to take a leap and dive into purchasing photos that caught my eye, curious to see the results of the authentication process.

PSA stands out as one of the top-rated companies for photo authentication, offering a systematic classification called "Types."

----
Here is a bit more directly from PSA:

The value of a photo can vary dramatically depending on the photograph’s ‘Type’ classification. Using PSA’s Photo Type Classification System©, each photo will be certified for life:

Type I – A 1st generation photograph, developed from the original negative, during the period (within approximately two years of when the picture was taken).

Type II – A photograph, developed from the original negative, during the period (more than approximately two years after the picture was taken).

Type III – A 2nd generation photograph, developed from a duplicate negative or wire transmission, during the period (within approximately two years of when the picture was taken).

Type IV – A 2nd generation photograph (or 3rd or later generation), developed from a duplicate negative or wire transmission, during a later period (more than approximately two years after the picture was taken).

Type 1 photographs are the most desirable and valuable of the four photograph types because of their vintage and originality.

While browsing eBay, I stumbled upon captivating images of rock icon Mick Jagger. The composition, capturing his stage presence and fashion, seemed like something that would resonate with other collectors as well.

In doing more research, I found that the photos were taken by rock photographer Michael Putland. Putland had worked for British music publications for years, but was hired by The Rolling Stones to shoot their 1973 European Tour. He went on to shoot The Stones for many years, as well as other legendary musical artists. He even has a book published called “Please to Meet You” which highlights 400 images of The Rolling Stones.

With the perfect blend of visual composition, subject, and renowned photographer, I took the plunge.

The authentication process, spanning about two months from submission to PSA, culminated in receiving the photos back just yesterday. At around $80 per item for authentication and encapsulation (or $40 for a Letter of Authenticity), it's a worthwhile journey.

I’m thrilled to announce that both images returned as Type 1 authentic photos! Now, the question arises: Hold onto these treasures for the long haul or explore selling them? Regardless, I'm enamored with the end product and look forward to cherishing these images.

What's your take on these images? Does the realm of photography collecting intrigue you?

Let's hear your thoughts…
