While there is the current craze over the 2013 New York (B) star notes that were duplicated with identical serial numbers in a later 2017 re-printing, few know there was a much older, similar error at the BEP.

In September 1995, New York Bank (B) star notes were printed for the 1995 series in the serial number range 00 000 001 - 00 640 000. Hard to find these at this point based just based on the age and short run of bills in circulation, so it would fetch a few bucks just for that, and with a lower serial a few bucks more.

Then in May 1996 another run of the 1995 series B star notes was printed, but mistakenly in the same serial range, this time 00 000 001 - 00 320 000. This meant there were 320,000 $1 notes in circulation, from the 1995 series and B bank with the identical serial numbers, very much like with the 2013 B notes (but far fewer than the 6.72M notes on that one).

But it gets better. The BEP made the same error AGAIN. TWICE MORE! Once in May 1997 (range 00 000 001 - 00 320 000) and again in September 1997 (range 00 000 001 - 00 640 000). Three erroneous re-prints meant that there were as many as FOUR $1 bill matched serial numbers for the lower (320 000) range.

I finally found and snagged one of those low range notes (third, May 1997 reprint) last week! Super excited, and more so for the crisp condition!

Not sure many know about these bills, which is probably why I got it for less than a 2103 B duplicate note goes for, yet it is SO much more scarce. I'm not expecting a match with any notes (statistically a zero chance) but would like to have one from all four printings, so now I'm 25% of the way there!

For total geeks: a way to distinguish which printing one of these notes came from is the face plate number (took me some time researching and on forums: the small number following the G in this case in the bottom right quadrant)
1st printing: Face Plate No.s 32, 43, 48, 51
2nd printing: Face Plate No.s 114 - 144
3rd printing: Face Plate No.s 363, 364, 369, 372
4th printing: Face Plate No.s 403, 404, 405, 406
