Josh Johnson Game-Used LA Wildcats XFL Jersey
The most recent addition to my game-used football jersey collection is this 2020 Los Angeles Wildcats gamer of legendary journeyman quarterback Josh Johnson.
Johnson was drafted by the Buccaneers in 2008. Since then, he’s changed teams 25 times, including stints in the United Football League, Alliance of American Football, and XFL. So many times Johnson’s career should’ve been left for dead but he’s always found a way to keep proving himself worthy of just one more season, and I appreciate that.
I purchased this jersey because Johnson’s time in the XFL exemplifies that career arc. He wore this jersey in a February 29, 2020 showdown against the New York Guardians (photomatched to Getty Image 1209537638), in which he threw for 330 yards and 2 TDs. His time in the XFL proved himself once again, and more NFL contracts followed. He’ll be suiting up for the Bengals this year. One more year, one more opportunity.
Game-Used XFL Jersey of Nate “Big Nate” Miller
It’s been awhile since I’ve landed a game-used jersey, but I got back on the big board with this XFL gamer of Nate “Big Nate” Miller.
Miller played football at LSU and spent a few seasons as an offensive lineman in the NFL, seeing some playing time with the Falcons in 1997. After NFL teams stopped calling, Miller resurfaced in the XFL with the Los Angeles Xtreme. I photomatched this jersey to the 2001 XFL “Million Dollar Game”, making it the second game-worn jersey I own from the league’s lone championship game and my third LA Xtreme jersey. This would be the last jersey Miller ever wore in a pro football game.
According to his XFL player bio, “Big Nate” is an avid comic book collector. Maybe he’ll show up here one of these days?
Xtreme Photomatching
One of my favorite pieces of sports memorabilia is this signed game-used L.A. Xtreme jersey of Errick “E-Rupt” Herrin from the XFL’s flagship 2001 season. Herrin was a former US Marine and USC linebacker who thought he would erupt in the XFL (and thus the nickname).
He had a huge game in the infamous double-OT showdown against the Chicago Enforcers that pushed back SNL’s start time past midnight. Although he went on to have a productive season, injuries limited his eruption and he didn’t dress for the “Million Dollar Game”.
Being a collector who needs proof that his jerseys were actually game-used - and being a single guy with no kids - I spent a weekend combing through XFL game footage on YouTube in an attempt to photomatch the jersey. Just when I was starting to conclude that the hours spent watching busted plays and dropped passes were a total loss, Herrin could be seen walking in front of a sideline shot of QB Tommy Maddox in the Week 8 telecast against the Las Vegas Outlaws, giving a clear view of the prominent dirt stain on the jersey’s lettering. Eat your heart out, MeiGray.
