Marvel find!

A buddy of mine and his brother have been collecting Marvel since they were kids. They recently uncovered binders of full sets! Curious if the community spots anything interesting?!?

Mantel Shortcut

Post image 1

I think that I created a new cheat code… I just added Mantel as an icon / shortcut on my home screen. I love having this at my fingertips… To anticipate the question (and to share with others!)

iOS Instructions:
Step 1: Open Safari and go to onmantel.com
Step 2: Tap the “Share” button
Step 3: Scroll down until you see “Add to Home Screen”
Step 4: Thank me every time you come to Mantel! :)

Android Instructions:
Step 1: Open Chrome and go to onmantel.com
Step 2: Tap the menu icon (3 dots)
Step 3: Select “Add to Home Screen”
Step 4: Thank me every time you come to Mantel! :)

Provenance

How much value does the community put on provenance? If there are two identical cards and one has a unique provenance (e.g. card collected by an athlete), is there a range of premium that should be placed on the card?
As an example, with the recent controversy with Giannis Antetokounmpo's 64-point game ball, would there be more value if the Pacer's versus Giannis himself would bring the ball to auction?
What if Giannis sold his own rookie card versus a random collector or auction house?
With so many different definitions of "value," where does provenance rank in how you value a card or collectible asset?

1/1 Encased Cards

Post image 1

With modern 1/1 cards & grails often coming already encased, is there increased pressure on grading companies? This Jacob Trouba "shield" card is the PREMIER example of the NY Ranger's Captain rookie card.

As a collector, are you risking something going wrong in the grading process (e.g. lost shipment, accidental damage, low grade), etc. versus keeping it in the original OEM case?

1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky

As one of the most iconic cards in the hobby, the 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky holds significant emotional and financial value for so many collectors. Not only is this the "key rookie card of hockey's greatest player" according to PSA's published card facts, it shows the evolution of the hobby and a time where cards were issued in both "sheet cut" and "normal fashion" (e.g. non-cut sheet form).

As the industry has evolved, the definition of "normal fashion" continues to evolve, so why hasn't PSA's stance on one of the most iconic hockey cards? With other companies willing to grade the card, is there further opportunity to differentiate these beyond "Authentic?"

While the ethos of this rule is directly stated in PSA's grading standards, the secondary purpose of it was to prevent trimming / alterations of cards. However, is there an opportunity to add an "eye appeal" grade to the card versus the standard 4-grade scale?
