My wife and I will be welcoming Baby Parker soon (BPonMantel, henceforth). I was thinking it would be fun to start building her a PC now and want this group to help figure out how to play it.
My current thinking:
- A sealed box of a 2025 for MLB, NBA, WNBA, NFL and EPL to be kept on a shelf until she's old enough to reliably decide to rip/keep sealed/flip. Could do non-sports too (Pokemon, etc) but I don't even know where to begin.
- A graded RC of some of the best women's sports athletes to ever play, though likely starting from names I watched and later, vs trying to find Althea Gibson and Ann Meyers cards.
I'm talking Serena Williams, Candace Parker, Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, Katie Ledecky, Caitlin Clark, etc. etc.
My wife likes the idea but thinks we should just get a binder with cheap base cards of each, given we don't know that BPonMantel will like sports (or which sports), collecting, etc.
I, on the other hand, thought maybe we'd try and get decent examples, even autos in good grades, so that one day she has a potentially valuable collection. Would be an investment on our part, and a risk, but the upside is the highest, and I wish my dad did it for me.
So what say you? Go all out and get potentially valuable cards? Should there be a 'criteria' for which athletes make the list? (Greatest of their sport, so 1-2 for each sport? Anyone really good?). Criteria for which cards? (Base RC? Base RC auto? Or just the best we can afford?).
Probably overthinking it but I do want to do this in a cool, impactful way. And of course, this gives me a chance to buy a lot of great stuff and pretend it isn't REALLY for me.
Debate!
