1947-66 Exhibits, 1948 Cleveland Indians World Champions.
On August 3, 1948, legendary Hall of Famer and MLB Pioneer Satchel Paige made his first start in The Show at age 42.
Paige started his professional career in the Negro League with the Chattanooga Black Lookouts before joining the Birmingham Black Barons and later several other teams. Paige threw seven innings and earned the win as the Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Senators, 5-3, which moved Cleveland (56-38) into a four-way tie for first.
A crowd of 72,434 attended Paige’s first start .
Cleveland went on to win the 1948 World Series, the only one in franchise history. 🏆
