On September 8, 1907, future Hall of Famer and Negro League star Walter “Buck” Leonard was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Leonard will made his professional baseball debut in 1933, with the Brooklyn Royal Giants of the Negro Leagues.
He was one of the greatest first basemen in Negro League history and a cornerstone of the Homestead Grays dynasty. He helped lead the Grays to multiple league championships during the 1930s and 1940s, forming a legendary partnership with Josh Gibson.
