This picture is the only time Eric Davis was caught with his eyes closed. His defense was every bit as electric as his bat. In center field for the Reds, he played with fearless intensity, explosive speed, and a cannon arm that made runners think twice. Davis didn’t just track balls, he attacked them, taking away hits in the gaps and turning routine singles into outs with aggressive routes and quick releases. He brought a wide receiver’s mentality to the outfield, changing games with momentum-shifting catches and throws, and setting a tone that defense mattered just as much as power in Cincinnati.

Normally, I only collect vintage baseball, but sometimes a modern player is so epic I need to memorialize them with a great graded card. I’m a sucker for these throwback joints…

Allen & Ginter may be less expensive than other releases, but I love that they offer game-used relics at an accessible price.

Looking for some honest advice from the hobby crowd.

I’ve been a lifelong Reds fan and always enjoyed watching JJ Hoover pitch. He recently opened a card shop just outside of Cincinnati, and I’m planning on making the drive up to check it out.

I’m not really the type to walk up and ask for autographs or geek out when I’m around pro athletes. I try to stay composed and treat them like anyone else I meet — I imagine it probably gets old being hounded all the time.

So what do you all think?

Do I bring a card and shoot my shot for an autograph, or just treat him like any other LCS owner and talk hobby?
