Willie Mays’ 1954 season is widely considered epic because it marked his return from military service to deliver one of the most dominant individual campaigns in MLB history, including an iconic World Series defensive play that redefined the game.
After missing most of the 1952 season and the entirety of 1953 while serving in the U.S. Army, the 23-year-old center fielder returned to the New York Giants and took the league by storm.
Dominant MVP Statistics: Mays tore the National League apart, posting a .345 batting average to win the NL batting title. He launched 41 home runs, drove in 110 RBIs, scored 119 runs, and finished with a staggering 1.078 OPS. His historic performance earned him his first National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.
"The Catch": In Game 1 of the 1954 World Series against the Cleveland Indians, Mays made what is arguably the most famous defensive play in baseball history. Sprinting with his back completely turned to home plate into the cavernous center field of the Polo Grounds, he made a miraculous over-the-shoulder catch on a 420+ foot drive hit by Vic Wertz. He then spun 180 degrees and fired a rocket back to the infield to prevent the lead runner from scoring, preserving a 2-2 tie in the 8th inning.
World Series Sweep: Led by Mays’ electric style of play and joy on the field, the Giants went on to win Game 1 in extra innings and completely swept the heavily favored 111-win Cleveland team 4-0. This marked the Giants' last World Series title in New York before relocating to San Francisco
