Happy to have seen the original street art piece by Banksy known as NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana) is a Banksy piece created in 2008 in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It is one of his most well-known works in the U.S. and depicts a young girl holding an umbrella. However, instead of protecting her from the rain, the umbrella appears to be the source of the downpour, while she reaches her hand out beyond its cover, as if to test if it is drier outside.
The piece is widely interpreted as a commentary on the failure of institutions and supposed protections that were meant to shield New Orleans residents from disaster but ultimately contributed to their suffering. It reflects the distrust and disillusionment many people felt toward the government and relief efforts after the hurricane.
In with my umbrella with my son on this adventure to find the original piece.
