1902 F&J Smith Victor Trumper

Post image 1

I was gifted this card during the National this year. The F&J smith sports set was issued in Scotland in 1902 and features famous Golfers and Cricketers.

Cards can be found with 3 different color backs: Red, Blue, and Black.

While I’m not chasing the different back colors (These cards are hard enough to source…..) I was missing a Victor Trumper in my collection.

Trumper is widely considered one of the greatest cricket players. On the baseball side of things he would be equivalent to a Ty Cobb caliber player

((bio+art+story+create)/rarity) x passion = collect
Flicking through the channels, I came across the documentary Fire in Babylon. Brilliant story of the dominant West Indies cricket team that won the World Cup in 1977 and 1979, based on the strength of their fast, aggressive and intimidating bowling, along with the leadership and batting of Captain Viv Richards. I was telling a friend about the documentary, and he told me I should check out the movie called 83 (subtitles), as a follow-up - which I did. This movie is the story of the Indian cricket team that won the 1983 world cup. While winning only 1 game in each of the 77 and 79, world cups, India beat England in semis at Lords to face the mighty West Indies team in the final. Despite the odds being 66-1 against them, India won the 1983 world cup. I really enjoyed both the in-your-face documentary, and the feel-good movie. Give both of them a shot in the order I watched them. Of course, after two great stories, I had to find 1983 cricket collectibles. Went through eBay Australia to find the two captains, Viv Richards of West Indies (1983/84 Butter card) and Kapil Dev (1983 Scanlens). My first cricket cards! Going to have track down a Colin Craft card. Would love to hear from some cricket collectors here on who would be the players and collections a new collector might consider.
