Marshall Faulk Flawless patch auto. I posted a Faulk Colts patch auto previously. From
Indianapolis, that was has more meaning to me, but Faulk is best remembered for his time on the Rams in The Greatest Show on Turf (also: what a badass nickname for a team!). He was Saqueon Barkley 1.0. Or LaDanian Tomlinson 1.5. He could run past you, through you, or around you and could catch a ton of balls.
I purchased this Brian Young St. Louis Rams Super Bowl XXXVI jersey on eBay a few months ago for a reasonable price. It was advertised as being worn in the Super Bowl and features Young’s signature on the front along with an inscription. It contains a stitch outline of the Super Bowl patch but the patch is gone.
I tried photomatching the jersey before I purchased it but couldn’t find definitive proof. Multiple things were working against me: Photo and video from 2001 were much more grainy than today’s technology, the Super Bowl was played on turf so the jersey has no dirt or grass stains, and visual documentation online is scant due to the passage of time. That said, one thing jumped out at me in my research that I couldn’t pass up: Aside from the fact that Young played a majority of the defensive snaps in the Big Game, he registered the first ever tackle of Tom Brady in a Super Bowl. Wow.
I landed the jersey and started a photomatching deep dive. The jersey features several marks and a few repairs - including a long repair under the numbering on the back - so I had some anchor points. I watched the game. I scrolled thousands of photos from multiple news outlets. I performed a google Google searches. I couldn’t find definitive proof. In fact, what I found only gave me more questions. This jersey was sold online twice since 2002; in the first sale it featured the Super Bowl patch and no signature, and in the second sale from just a few years ago it featured the signature but no patch. What’s going on here?
I deployed a last-ditch Hail Mary. Since Brian Young is currently a coach for the Saints, I researched Saints front office staff contact information to attempt to derive their organization’s email address naming convention and I sent a brief email to the address that would’ve been assigned to Young given that convention. In my email I acknowledged that I was a screwball and simply asked if he remembered whether that jersey was the one he used in the Super Bowl. My email wasn’t auto-returned via mailer daemon so there was a chance it was a valid address.
I waited…and waited…and waited…but no response. Looking at the dude, I doubt he even uses email. Oh well.
Brian, if you ever happen to see this, I’d love to hear from you!
