Tommy John was 13-3 with a 2.59 ERA in July of 1974 when he experienced the "strangest sensation I had ever known" in his elbow. Two months later he became the first patient to undergo UCL reconstruction surgery. The groundbreaking operation by Dr. Frank Jobe was given very little chance of succeeding, but it did, and John won 164 more big league games.
