HONDO'S HISTORY #11: Batman Vol. 1 #11 Jul. 1942
Writer: Bill Finger
Cover Artists: Jerry Robinson, Fred Ray
The Joker enters a contest and wins the prize for impersonating himself. The news reach Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, who become aware of Joker's return. After this, the Joker decides to pull crimes giving away hints on the advertising section of the newspapers. In this fashion, Joker pulls his first heist and a street is filled with old time vehicles, while Joker steals a nearby jewelry store. Batman and Robin chase the criminal using some of the vehicles available, but they lose track of the maniac when he takes the subway train.
Joker's next hit is during the performance of Presto the magician. Bruce Wayne attends the event hoping to meet with Linda Page, but Robin soon deduces Joker's plans and he goes to the place to warn Bruce, who changes into Batman, but is knocked unconscious on stage while Joker and his goons get away. Robin follows them to the underground escape route and tries to stop them, but he is outnumbered. Tired of Robin's interference in his plans, Joker decides to kill the youngster by locking him in a room with burning sulphur that would asphixiate him. When Robin is left alone, he takes some telephone cables from the floor and sends a message for Batman. A few minutes later, Batman has received the message and is looking for Robin with help from the Gotham City Police Department. When he finally finds the kid, it is too late as Robin is already dead. Desperate, Batman takes a special machine from the police officers and puts it on Robin's mouth. The machine pulls out the sulphur from Robin's lungs while at the same time pushes in fresh air. Robin recovers and Batman takes him back to Wayne Manor.
With Robin out of danger, Batman deduces Joker's next move and goes there alone. Joker was pretending to be a painter in the rooftop of a building while his henchmen steal from the apartments below. Batman locates Joker, causes him to drop to the street and then he beats the criminal to a pulp for trying to kill Robin. Joker is sent back to jail and Bruce is satisfied with his payback.

A radio show starts to air and the host introduces his guest: The Great Jaffeer; a man known for the valuable gem he wears on his turban. At that same moment, four criminals have decided to steal the gem from Jaffeer, not knowing that he is being listened on radio by all the people in the city including Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. When the criminals strike, Jaffeer curses each one of them with a very specific way of dying, but despite the threat, the criminals kill Jaffeer and steal the gem. Bruce and Dick change into their crime fighting gear and they go to the place of Fritz, the fence, who is known for working with criminals and their stolen jewels. After a brutal shakedown, Fritz gives the duo the information they need and soon they find the hideout of the criminals. Batman and Robin bust inside and a fight begins. Robin chases down one of the thugs, who steps on the railroad tracks and an electric shock kills him instantly, just like the curse predicted.
The three remaining thugs escape and one of them decides to leave the city because of the curse. Batman and Robin learn that the criminal is trying to escape by air and they use the Batplane to catch up with him. During the chase, the criminal jumps off his own plane and opens a parachute to stop his fall. However, he falls straight on some cables and the strings from the parachute choke him to death. The second death has taken place, just like the curse predicted.
Batman and Robin chase the only two remaining criminals and they confront one of them, who had prepared a trap to kill the duo, but fails. Batman then punches the man in the chest and somehow the blow kills the criminal. After an autopsy, it is revealed that the thug had a bullet inserted in his heart and that Batman's punch caused the bullet to reach the man's heart. Yet again, the curse claims another victim.
The last criminal has traveled to a desert area as the curse predicted that he would die by water. Thinking himself safe, the criminal forgot to carry some water with him and after long hours walking in the desert, he dies of dehydration. Batman and Robin find the body and they realize that Jaffeer's curse was absolutely accurate. Without a clear explanation, the dynamic duo return home.

However, once inside, Russo manages to get control of the entire facility with aid from his gang, who had captured the prison's warden and have replaced him with one of their own men disguised as the man. Russo releases some of the most notorious criminals and they start creating chaos in the city, while he controls the operations from inside the prison.
When Batman encounters one of the criminal factions robbing a bank, he tries to stop them, but he fails. However, he notices that one of the thugs is a convicted criminal who should be in prison. With help from Commissioner Gordon, Batman visits the prison, but he finds that the criminal he saw at the crime scene was held up in his cell. Before leaving, Batman checked over the cell of Russo and noticed that the man was wearing different shoes than the rest of the inmates and once they were outside, Batman asked Gordon to arrange something so Batman can be arrested as an undercover agent to investigate inside the prison.
With a different appearance, Batman is disguised as a ruthless criminal and soon, Russo asks him to be part of his next crime. Before leaving the prison, Batman contacts Robin and informs him of Russo's plan. When the criminals reach their destination, Batman reveals himself and with help from Robin fight against Russo's thugs. After a long strugle, Batman and Robin are finally outnumbered and they are both taken back to the prison, where Russo plans to kill Batman on the gas chamber. Using a last wish, Batman asks some medicine from Robin and he delives the capsules to Batman, who is then placed on the gas chamber and apparently killed.
When the criminals take out the body, Batman recovers and together with Robin they get the situation under control by releasing the true prison guards and placing all the criminals back on their cells.
