It was about a year ago when MLB announced that stats from the Negro Leagues would be added to the official record. Although I had cards of former Negro League players, that announcement piqued my interest in finding more - only for me to quickly realize that there really weren't a lot of them from the era, and ones of prominent players that did exist were somewhat "cost prohibitive."
It did lead me to discovering the 1976 Shakey's Pizza "Baseball's Greatest Players" set, however. It was a regional release here in the Pacific Northwest and in addition to it having all the usual Hall of Fame suspects it also included greats from the Negro Leagues, for some potentially being one of their only cards.
There is definitely a kitchiness factor to the set that's appealing to me, so over the past year I've collected many of the cards and today am presenting what are probably the Big Four of the Negro League star players.
