Anyone know the Fleer/Skybox backstory?

Post image 1
Post image 2

I've been looking at 90s basketball inserts on eBay and for most of the decade the cards are pretty standard, maybe a little touch of flair here and there ... but then these wild cards from Fleer/Skybox hit the scene, like Precious Metal Gems or the Metal Universe cards. They are so different from anything that came before and more unique than most of what has come out since.

Does anybody know the backstory of these cards? How did cards go from something pretty basic to having flames and aliens and foil?

I don’t own it like Aoki, but…

Post image 1

Steve Aoki kicks off his episode of Mantel Quality Stories with a piece from Banksy’s “Dismaland” exhibition. I got to see one of the other pieces from that exhibition, a distorted Little Mermaid, on display at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo last month.

I had no idea Banksy’s work would be on display when I went to the museum on a whim. Quite the fun surprise. The exhibit ended earlier this month, so it was fortunate timing for me.

Ken Goldin predicts T206 Honus Wagner would sell for $30M today

“We got one of those cards in 2013,” Goldin said in this Philadelphia Inquirer profile. “We set a record with it at the time: $2.1 million. It was the most valuable card ever sold at an auction. Today that card would go for about $30 million, but back then it was a record, and that really put Goldin Auctions on the map.”

The card sold for $7.25M in a Goldin Auctions sale in 2022.
